I don't like pumpkin pie.

Generally, when I first mention this, I get jaws-dropped owl-eyed stares of disbelief.  You don't like WHAT?!  Occasionally, this is followed by "You need to try my grandmother's/mom's/friend's/that restaurant's pumpkin pie and you will definitely change your mind."  But I have tried the other pies, and I have not changed my mind.  It's a texture-taste combination that I just can't seem to like.  But aside from pumpkin pie, I do like (and occasionally love) anything and everything pumpkin-flavored: pumpkin spice coffee, chai tea, pumpkin rolls, seeds, bread, muffins, and candies...and now I have discovered this: pumpkin cheesecake trifles.

I think they'd be totally worth the post-dairy-consumption stomachache...which I would probably sleep off in my annual post-Thanksgiving-dinner nap.  Alternatively, I might give this recipe a try.  Yum.

Sundays are the days that we take a break.  We're together, in the same town, in our own home.

Cory's mom makes enormously delicious chocolate chip pancakes on a weekly basis.  They're perfectly round and thin.  After months of staying with my now-in-laws almost every weekend, I came to love the dessert-like breakfast almost as Cory.

So I attempt to recreate said pancakes on a weekly basis.  Sometimes they turn out perfect and pretty, but most of the time, they look like one great big chocolate and pancake mess.

Does this affect the taste?

Not in the slightest.  We still eat every last bite.

This is on my list of things to cook.  It looks simple, inexpensive, and delicious.  I'll try it next weekend.

we flit, we float...

everywhere!  We have been both south and north in two weeks and have at last resumed our central position.  Unfortunately, we will still be flitting between time zones until August.  Oh well.

Meanwhile, in our vertical crossings of the nation, we have had a wonderful time.

C at the Sanibel Bean.  We shared a deliciously sweet and thick and smooth mocha with just a little more chocolate than usual, but C. kept his Italiano Panini to himself and I hogged my veggie platter with HUMMUS and TABOULI!  If you know me, you know that I can eat an Sam's Club container of hummus in one sitting if I have enough veggies to go with it.  C just laughed at me and my occasional vegetarianism.





The beaches of Sanibel were beautiful and the gulf was so bright and clear and so aqua blue that I wanted to pack it up in my suitcase and bring it home.  It will so sad if the oil spill gets closer to such shores, particularly for all the small and interesting businesses that make up the livelihoods of the island's residents, but also for the incredible wildlife we saw.

We biked the entire length of the island.  It was exhausting but SO worth it.  The whole place is beautiful, but the lighthouse is particularly neat.  Several years ago, it was going to be turned off, as it is no longer needed, but the community protested and it remained turned on.  I can't recall the rest of the history, but I know that it's loved in San-Cap (Sanibel/Captiva, oh look, native speak!) history.  It's unique, to be sure, compared to your average lighthouse.

We came home (to my parents' house for my mail and some sleep after hours on the road) to this little paper in the mail.  Target is wonderful for your wedding registry.  We have 10% off any purchases of items from the registry that we didn't receive as gifts as well as four coupons for specific items that we registered for.  Now we can get a vacuum and maybe a mixer!  We also have gift cards from some very loving family members (THANKS!).  Now all we need is better storage in our itty bitty kitchen.

That brings me to another post, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow.  I've gotten too image heavy for tonight!

festive cobbler?

As a wedding gift, my best friend's mom found me this cookbook:

Now, this is the cookbook that my mom has always use, and Oma as well, to make special dishes for holidays or from gardens or just for fun.  So my mom asked Kat's mom to find a copy of it, and she did!  I have the single hardback volume, while my mom has a giant binder with a bunch of other recipes stuck in, but both editions have a TON of reference information.  I highly recommend them.  I have been told that the older editions are the best, but I haven't seen newer ones in order to compare.  I just happen to find the 1978 edition much more fun than a brand-new volume, maybe because it's the same one my mom has used for my entire life.

My new in-laws have a cherry tree in their yard that produces rather sour cherries.  They look good but taste tart.  So I looked up cherries in the index of the BCC and found a recipe for cherry cobbler that calls for tart cherries.  How perfect is that?

It's in the oven right now, looking all patriotic with the bright red cherries in a blue and white Bybee Pottery casserole pan borrowed from my mother-in-law.  It makes me smile, because she and my mom both love the same pattern from Bybee.

I hope it tastes good!
