A Technical Question

One of the things I miss about my old wordpress.com site was that I could reply directly to comments, rather than just listing a response somewhere below.  I feel like conversations almost get started in the comments section and then I don't know how to reply, especially when I want to thank people for kind words of encouragement.  I always click through to blogs if the commenter's name links, so sometimes I'll leave a message there or find an email address, but at that point, I feel a little weird and the conversation is rather stilted.

Has anyone worked out how to do this on blogger?  I switched because it was easier for me to work with, but sometimes I wish I'd stayed with wordpress.com.

I've actually considered creating a self-hosted wordpress site, just for the sake of learning how to do it, but I haven't had the chance to do it yet and don't think I will get the time in the near future.

ventures into the blogosphere :: getting crafty with Poppytalk Handmade

I'm always looking for good DIY projects, things that you can personalize  and make your own, and this project, a guest post by Janis Nicolay of Pinecone Camp is most definitely of that sort.  Poppytalk Handmade is a site with that wonderful wabi-sabi aesthetic ever-present, so it's no surprise that I would find something I love here.  I don't know if the style in this project would fit well with my home in the style shared here, but I have some old wall paper found at the thrift store (formerly used to cover a headboard found on the side of the road) that just might work.  You could also use some odds and ends for this project--maybe the cover of a takeout menu with a pretty design or some wrapping paper.  I'd advise against any newspaper, though--with mod podge, the ink tends to run, I've learned.  You could always photocopy something, though, if you want that kind of a look.

ventures into the blogosphere :: if you have a sister...

then you should read this.

the lil bee: Advice to Devon and her sister

I've got a little sister myself, and she's my oldest and dearest friend.  I sang to her when she was a baby and taught her to say please and thank you on a trip from Wisconsin to Kentucky (oh, how patient my parents were).  I hold no responsibility for her manners at all (which, thankfully, turned out to be good).  Sisters are wonderful.  Every girl should have one.  If she doesn't, best friends will do, but there's nothing like a sister.

an idea?

I saw this on Annekata:

and I saw this the other day on Grosgrain Fabulous:

So what about combining the two projects?  Using knits, maybe taken from some tshirts (thrifting trip and a bit of fabric dye experimentation may be required), to make a simple dress?  It'd take a bit of work to find a shirt long enough, but an extra-extra-large men's shirt could do it, I think?  I do think I'll have to give it a go next week.  I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of hiking in a dress, but a just-above-the-knee-length version of this, with a higher waist, is kind of what I have in mind.

ventures into the blogosphere: mackin ink

Have you ever read Mackin Ink?

{image posted on Mackin Ink, originally from Annabel Kassar}

It's fun, it's full of great stories, and Karey M. is an altogether enjoyable writer.  She posts all sorts of nothing-short-of-awesome images, and tells great stories about her three daughters.  This one, mackin ink: ricky..., is particularly laugh-inducing.  Children are so precious.  I go looking for good writing some days just for inspiration, and I don't remember how I got to Mackin Ink (probably reading about Alt Summit somewhere), and read through a bunch of posts.  You'll smile, I'm sure, and then want to go write a great big bundle of all your thoughts, good or bad, and everything that is honest.  It's some parts stream of consciousness, other parts planned humor, all parts inspiring.

Remind me to find a synonym for inspiring; I write it at least twice per post, I think.  Thoughts?

For now,

holiday DIY of the day #1

Ready for a countdown to Christmas?

It's the last day of November, and there are twenty-five days until Christmas.  I'm going to find a fun DIY project for you every day until then, and perhaps (if the clouds would just clear and give me some photographably useful light) post the whatnot garland that will soon hang from the wall of our living room.

For today, I took a little adventure to Nice Package and came across these...

{if the picture doesn't show, click on that little blue box with the question mark.  I'm having some technical difficulties at the moment}

I believe these darling little ziploc bags would be too fun to replicate as an easy and personalized way to deliver edible Christmas gifts.  I'll be trying my hand at one later, though I believe it may end up on my desk as a storage option. Most baked goods don't make past C. or me.

fun found about: creature comforts

A long time ago in a Chick-fil-a far, far away, Sunshine was my nickname.  It was relatively ironic on Saturdays, when I opened, but not so much on Tuesday nights, when they had too few people until I arrived at four.

So I posted this immediately.

from one of my favorite blogs:

Color Me Katie: The Tourist Lane
